Lesley Millar-Nicholson, MIT Technology Licensing Office

Lesley Millar-Nicholson is the Director of the Technology Licensing Office (TLO) at MIT. Until July 2016, she served as the Director of the Office of Technology Management (OTM) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a position she held since 2006. She originally entered tech transfer at Illinois in 2002 as an Engineering Technology Manager having previously been an intern recruited to assist in managing a backlog of invention disclosures. As Director of the MIT TLO, Ms. Millar-Nicholson leads a team of more than 40 professional staff and interns who work with faculty, staff, corporations, and venture groups to commercialize MIT and Lincoln Lab intellectual property arising from the more than $1.5B in research conducted at those two entities. read more

Pamela Cox is a partner and Chair of the IP Transactions practice at Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP. Ms. Cox is talented at unraveling complex deal structures and devising creative agreement solutions. Formerly in-house, Ms. Cox now focuses her practice on intellectual property transactions, protection and dispute resolution for clients ranging from multinational corporations to non-profit institutions. Ms. Cox is a patent attorney who understands her clients’ intellectual property and agreement needs, and remains passionately engaged until their strategic objectives are achieved. Tatiana Moore is an experienced technology business executive with twenty years of business development and intellectual property licensing experience at IBM and Microsoft. She brings strong leadership and deep transactional expertise combined with an extensive software development background and management skills to the deal making process. Since leaving Microsoft in late 2015, Ms. Moore established T.K. Moore Associates LLC, a business development and intellectual property licensing consulting practice. She serves on the Board of Governors of Certified Licensing Professionals, Inc. and is an Advisory Board Member of TurboPatent, a Voyager Capital portfolio company. read more

Luis Mejia, Stanford University

Mr. Mejia is an Associate Director in the Office of Technology Licensing at Stanford University. He leads a team of Licensing Associates with a technology portfolio of over 1,600 technologies ranging from engineering to medicine, representing 75% of Stanford’s license revenue. In his 26 years at Stanford, he has managed the University’s two biggest patents, three major patent litigations (including two cases argued before the US Supreme Court), negotiated over 250 licenses, and evaluated over 700 inventions, including the PageRank Algorithm which was the instrumental IP that led to the creation of Google. read more

Timothy Howe, Howe Ventures LLC

Dr. Timothy R Howe, Esq., retired from Sanofi Pasteur in 2014 to establish Howe Ventures LLC, a biotech consulting boutique where he counsels small to mid-size clients on IP portfolio development, management and valuation, choice of entity, asset monetization and exit strategies.  While at Sanofi Tim held a number of positions of increasing responsibility, first as a patent attorney in the IP department, then in a dual capacity reporting to Legal Affairs and Corporate Development, followed by an assignment within the Strategic Projects Office in their corporate headquarters in Lyon, France.  During his five-year assignment in France Dr. Howe worked closely with senior management in Corporate Communications and Public Policy, while continuing to support the R&D and Corporate Development functions.  Immediately prior to his retirement he served as General Counsel and Head, Acquisitions and Licensing Transactions, a global function in which he and his team of four senior transactional attorneys based in the US, Canada and France, were responsible for M&A and complex licensing transactions. read more

Antoine Bellemare, Université Laval

Dr. Bellemare is a technology transfer officer and patent committee member at the University-Industry Liaison Office of Université Laval and the founder of the technology management consulting firm Research Patent Management. He has more than twenty years of experience in technology development in a wide array of environments (VC, startup, public multinational company, and academia) that give him a panoramic view on issues relating to technology transfer and licensing. His principal expertise is in the strategic management of intellectual assets, in drafting and negotiating of licence agreements, in IP valuation, and in the financing and management of technological projects. He holds a bachelor degree in physics engineering and a PhD in electrical engineering from Université Laval for work related to fiber laser technology. read more

Dr. Grannatt retired September 2012 after 25 years in the global pharmaceuticals industry. He was Vice President of Global Business Development and Licensing at Novartis. Prior to Novartis, he held senior positions at Sterling Winthrop and Lex Service, an acquisitive, diversified UK-based company. Dr. Grannatt has an extensive deal sheet. read more

Bruce Harrer, Battelle

Bruce Harrer serves as Commercialization Manager for Battelle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. His focus is analytical instrumentation and selected areas of thin-film materials. Since assuming this responsibility, Mr. Harrer has negotiated numerous licenses and option agreements in these areas and has also negotiated cooperative agreements with these companies that have served to enable subsequent licenses. read more

Malcolm Kaus

Malcolm (Mal) J. Kaus, retired from ExxonMobil as Upstream Intellectual Property Process and Licensing Manager where he had responsibility for all ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company’s work processes and procedures for the acquisition, maintenance, assertion and defense of its Intellectual Property.  As Licensing Manager, Dr. Kaus was also responsible for all licensing transactions impacting ExxonMobil’s Upstream business.  He was also responsible for Intellectual Property aspects of Commercial Agreements, Joint Developments and Joint Industry Programs, as well as dispute resolution and enforcement issues. In his previous assignment Dr. Kaus was the Licensing Manager and Intellectual Property Process Manager for ExxonMobil Chemical Company. read more

Art Rose, Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear

Arthur S. Rose is a partner in the law firm of Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear in the Irvine, California office and has been with the firm since 1982.

Art specializes in the preparation and negotiation of licensing agreements involving software, patents, trademarks & trade secrets and the resolution of disputes relating to intellectual property rights. Additionally, Art often takes a lead role in the enforcement of patent, trademark and copyright rights as well as the procurement of patent rights for medical devices and software/internet related inventions.  

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Rose was a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office working in the Medical Device area.  Art obtained his juris doctorate, with honors, from George Washington University Law Center and clerked on the U.S. Court of Claims in Washington, D.C.  He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from UCLA. read more
