CLP Recertification Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

November 22, 2010

Question: When will my CLP credential expire?

The CLP certification is recognized for a period of three years.  The printed certificate you received after earning the CLP certification lists the date your credential will expire. If certification is not renewed, it expires the last day of the month, three (3) years after certification was initially earned.

Question: If I have lost my certificate, can I get another copy?

Yes. Please contact Cynthia Allen, CLP Certification Manager, at callen@licensingcertification.org for more information.

Question: Why should I recertify?

Recertification demonstrates your personal commitment to ensuring high standards within the licensing profession. By recertifying your credential, you demonstrate that you have maintained the knowledge and the skills necessary to be a certified licensing professional.  Earning your certification was a significant career achievement, and maintaining it helps fulfill your personal and professional goals and may increase your career opportunities and job mobility.

Question:  Do I have to pay an annual fee to maintain my CLP credential?

No. There is a renewal fee of $400 that is due every three years at the time of recertification.

Question:  How do I access the online application?

The online application is available http://www.castleworldwide.com/clp/. Select “Returning/Recertification Candidate” and enter your user name and password. If you do not remember your login information, click “forget password” or email Cynthia Allen, CLP Certification Manager, at callen@licensingcertification.org.

What activities can be used to earn continuing education (CE) credit?

CE can be earned from a variety of professional development activities. These are activities in which you are likely already participating, including:

•    Attendance at industry educational events (conferences, seminars, workshops, webinars, etc.)
•    Speaking at industry educational events (conferences, seminars, workshops, webinars, etc.)
•    Teaching
•    Writing articles, books, or book chapters
•    Full-time employment

A full list of activities and the number of credits earned for each activity is included in the recertification section of the CLP Web site.

Does CLP keep track of my participation in events such as the AUTM, LES or BIO annual meetings?

No. The CLP Web site includes a list of events that may be used for CE however candidates are responsible for tracking and reporting the number of hours that they spend in activities that are educational in focus and will enhance their knowledge/skill.  The CLP Recertification Committee will review CE activities submitted by candidates as necessary to determine if they are acceptable.

Question: If a course or event is approved for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit, does the same value apply for CLP CE?

Not necessarily. CLP does not assign values to industry events. Each candidate is required to track and self-report the hours that they spend in educational activities related to the CLP exam content.

Question: Do networking events count toward CE?

No. CLP will consider events that are educational in focus such as concurrent sessions, workshops, etc. The Recertification Committee will not consider social or networking events.

Question:  The online application includes a list of CE activities. Are these all of the possible events to earn CLP CE?

No. The Recertification Committee will consider events that are educational. The content must be relevant to the CLP examination content. You can review the CLP exam content online. If you have a course that you are not sure will be acceptable, you can send the course title, course description, agenda, and/or link to a description of the event to Cynthia Allen, CLP Certification Manager, at callen@licensingcertification.org for review by the Recertification Committee.

Question:  How do I add an event that is not in the drop-down menu?

Select “other” from the drop down menu and include the course title, description, sponsoring organization, link to the agenda/brochure, etc. It is better to include as much information as possible for the Recertification Committee’s review.

Question:  How do I add full-time employment to my application?

Select “other” from the drop-down menu and enter “Full-time Employment” and the total number of hours.  One (1) CLP credit is awarded per two (2) months of full-time employment. In other words, one year (12 months) of full-time employment is equal to 6 CLP credits.

Question:  If I presented a session or taught a course/workshop, how do I enter the CE credits for this activity in the online application?

Select “other” from the drop down menu and include the course title, description, sponsoring organization, link to the agenda/brochure, etc. It is better to include as much information as possible for the committee’s to review. One (1) clock hour (60 min) of participation as a presenter is equal to three (3) CLP CE credits.

Question:  Will CLP accept a hard copy application?

No. CLP will only accept recertification applications via the online system.

Can I submit my application before my certification expires?

You may submit your application up to one year prior to your expiration date.

Question: If I submit my application early, what will my new expiration date for my CLP credential be? When will I have to recertify again?

If you submit your application early (up to one year before your deadline) your credential will be valid for three years from your original recertification deadline.  You will not lose any time if you recertify early.

Question:  Can I keep track of my CE activity with CLP?

Yes. You may log into the online application and enter your CE activity as it occurs. The system will save your submissions.

Question:  What happens if my recertification is denied?

If your application is denied, CLP will provide you with information about the appeals process.

Question: If I submit my application early, can I count any CE activity between the date that I submit my application and my expiration date toward my next renewal cycle?

Yes.

Question:  What happens if I do not recertify by my deadline?

After CLP, Inc. approves the renewal application the CLP will be sent a new certificate. The expiration date of the reinstated certification will be the same as if the certification had been renewed on time.

Question: What if I fail to recertify and my certificate has expired?

If certification is not renewed, it expires the last day of the month, three (3) years after certification was initially earned. An individual whose CLP credential has expired for 1 year or less may reinstate by meeting all of the renewal requirements, submitting a renewal application, paying the renewal fee of $400 and an additional administrative fee of $100 (total of $500). An individual whose CLP credential has expired for more than 1 year must re‐apply for certification. To re‐apply the individual must meet all eligibility requirements in place at the time of re‐application, must pay the initial application fee, and must pass the CLP exam.

Question: Will CLP verify the information in my recertification application?

Approximately 4% of renewal applications will be audited each year to verify the information submitted. Individuals whose renewal applications are selected for audit will be required to submit evidence that all requirements have been sufficiently met.
